KEY LARGO (CBSMiami) – A South Florida church day worker was charged Monday with child abuse.

According to Monroe County Sheriff's spokeswoman Becky Herrin, 51-year-old Virginia Amaya is accused of injuring a 4-year-old girl's lip while disciplining her for misbehavior on the playground at St. Justin Church in Key Largo.

According to a report by Major Crimes Unit Det. Vince Weiner, several children were misbehaving on the playground on February 24th.  As Amaya was reportedly scolding the children, she pushed the girl's head down, hitting her lip on a table.

The incident was reported to the Sheriff's Office by the school's administration.

Amaya remains in the Monroe County Jail. Jail records don't indicate whether Amaya has hired an attorney.
