Florida Governor Ron DeSantis Signals Another Push For E-Verify System

TALLAHASSEE (CBSMiami/NSF) - Gov. Ron DeSantis wants Florida to set up a system that will require employers to verify the immigration status of job applicants.

But it's unclear if that effort will get any traction among lawmakers, especially since a similar effort failed during the most recent legislative session earlier this year.

DeSantis announced he'd make another push for so-called E-Verify legislation during the 2020 legislative session while speaking to reporters at an annual press event Tuesday in the Capitol organized by the Associated Press.

Appearing at the same event, Senate President Bill Galvano later said he would approach the legislation cautiously.

A proposal already introduced in the state Senate is sure to garner scrutiny, particularly among agriculture, construction, tourism interests and other industries that rely on immigrant labor.
