WEST PALM BEACH (CBSMiami/AP) – A prominent South Florida doctor accused in a federal corruption case along with U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez appeared in court Wednesday seeking release on bond.

A magistrate judge, however, issued no immediate ruling on bail for Dr. Salomon Melgen, 61, after a hearing Wednesday. Among the issues are the details of property and bank accounts held by Melgen in his native Dominican Republic, as well as the value of the artwork he owns.

Melgen has been behind bars for nearly eight weeks. He has pleaded not guilty to falsely diagnosing patients with eye conditions and performing unnecessary procedures to bilk Medicare out of some $105 million.

The New Jersey corruption case involves allegations that Menendez used his clout to do favors for Melgen.
