Fla. Students Assist 'Obamacare' Enrollment
MIAMI (CBSMiami/AP) - Local college students are taking it upon themselves to help people sign up for insurance under the Affordable Care Act, also known as "Obamacare."
This comes as federal health officials have been aggressively courting young adults to sign up through celebrity endorsement and hip social media campaigns.
Medical, nursing and law students across Florida are getting certified as counselors and staffing enrollment events as the March 31 deadline to sign up for insurance under the Affordable Care Act looms.
Many of the students were already active in programs that provided medical and legal services in low-income neighborhoods, so helping clients enroll in plans instead of offering one-time services seemed a natural progression.
Two law students at Florida International University and more than 60 students at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine went through the five-hour training and have enrolled more than 100.
