Fla. Legislators Trade Last-Minute Budget Offers

TALLAHASSEE (CBSMiami/AP) —  With a Tuesday deadline looming for a new state budget, Florida legislators are trading  last-minute offers to come up with a final deal.

The offers cover everything from state employee pay raises to spending for schools and environmental projects.

A new budget must be on the desk of lawmakers by Tuesday in order for the session to end on time.

The Senate on Sunday offered to back away from a proposal to split up the Florida A&M University and Florida State University. Instead the Senate is asking the Florida Board of Governors to study the idea and vote by next March.

The House, meanwhile, offered pay raises for state law enforcement officers and judicial system employees.

The House also made offers to spend money to restore Florida's springs and help with the Indian River Lagoon.
