Fla. Legislators Push For End To Greyhound Racing
TALLAHASSEE (CBSMiami/AP) — South Florida legislators are pushing to end a requirement which says greyhound dog-tracks must have on-site races if they want to keep card and betting games.
Despite the support of top lawmakers and the wife of Senate President Don Gaetz, the proposal stalled in a Senate committee on Tuesday.
Instead, the panel passed a stripped down bill that requires dog tracks around the state to report all injuries to racing greyhounds.
Sen. Maria Sachs, D-Boca Raton, tried to get the Senate Gaming Committee to vote for the proposal but she backed off the effort after questions arose over whether it would allow an expansion of gambling.
Other senators on the panel; however, said it was clear there weren't enough votes to pass the proposal.
