MIAMI BEACH (CBSMiami) -- The rising sea levels in South Florida have become such a major problem that FIU professors from the School of Journalism and Mass Communications have developed an app that will help residents in Miami-Dade, Broward and Monroe County deal with the flooding situation.

Find it online at "eyesontherise.org/app."

It allows homeowners to see if your property will be underwater some day.

On Wednesday, students were out on Miami Beach documenting the flooding by taking pictures and video of the situation on Indian Creek in Miami Beach.

"We are trying to capture that into the website so others could see what is going on around you. You can read about it, you can see the gauges, you could hear about it, but to see it, that is the purpose of the app," said Kevin Boyd, a graduate student at FIU.

Journalism professor Susan Jacobson said the app was created a year ago and they believe it will be a helpful tool to all residents that raises awareness to the situation.

"When people use the sea level rise viewer and they see their address, what happens, and what could potentially happen at different levels of sea rise, that's an eye-opener. That makes them understand better that sea level rise is something they need to be concerned with and maybe talk to their elected officials about," said Jacobson.

Jacobson also said the eyesontherise.org/app will also allow residents be part of the crowd source flood reporting by documenting the flooding situation where they live.
