MIAMI (CBSMiami) – There was an overflowing and emotional turn out on Friday night, as a grassroots movement gained support in exposing the risks of firefighters to cancer.

In response to CBS4's ongoing investigation "The Silent Killer," wives and loved ones of firefighters created the campaign "Fire Families Against Cancer."

The campaign's focus is better protective gear and support for research.

CBS4's Chief Investigator Michele Gillen was acknowledged for her investigation – and the changes it has triggered across the community – at the event.

South Florida fire chiefs all turned out for the gathering.

"It was night of inspiration as family members of firefighters who lost their battle to cancer, along with a firefighter who is a cancer survivor, spoke and received standing ovations," said Michelle Guevera, cofounder of Save Our Firefighters.
