Fire Destroys Half A Duplex In Fort Lauderdale

FORT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) – One side of a duplex was destroyed Thursday morning in a fire.

Nobody was injured during the blaze that burnt half the duplex at 821 NW 2nd Avenue.

Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue responded to a call for a fire. Upon arrival, firefighter/paramedics from Firehouse 2 encountered heavy smoke and fire coming from the windows near the front door of the home.

Witnesses on scene told fire crews that there was a child in one of the bedrooms of the townhome.

Firefighters immediately conducted a search, using a technique known as vent/enter/search (VES), where they enter through a window with a hose line to protect them in an effort to quickly rescue the victim.

Firefighters did not find anyone in the room and had to exit due to extreme heat.

After the search, fire crews conducted a rapid, aggressive attack on the fire and managed to contain it to one side of the duplex. The other side, however, sustained severe smoke damage.

Nobody was injured in the blaze but because of the extreme heat several of the firefighters had damage to their protective gear which will be replaced.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
