2 hospitalized after Hollywood high-rise fire

Two people were hospitalized after being overcome by smoke inhalation in a third-alarm fire Tuesday afternoon at a high-rise apartment building in Hollywood, officials said. Both are expected to be OK.

Fire contained to one unit

The blaze broke out at the Edgewater Beach Towers, a 13-story oceanfront condominium complex located in the 300 block of Surf Road.

Chopper 4 images showed heavy black smoke and visible flames pouring from one of the units. Firefighters and emergency personnel worked quickly to contain the fire and ensure the safety of residents in the building.

Resident and first responder hospitalized

Officials said the resident of the affected apartment was unharmed by the fire and had been evaluated by Hollywood Fire Rescue personnel.

Additionally, a woman was transported to Aventura Hospital, overcome by smoke inhalation. CBS News Miami's Abby Dodge learned a first responder was also taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation.

The cause of the fire, which was contained to one unit on the top floor, remains under investigation.

After the fire was put out, crews continued to monitor the building to ensure no hot spots remained, Hollywood Fire Rescue officials said.
