MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- FIFA president Sepp Blatter announced Tuesday that he will step down as FIFA President while speaking at a news conference in Zurich.

Blatter will remain in his position until a special election appoints his successor.

I am now free from the constraints of an election. I will be in a position to focus on profound reforms. for Many years we have called for reforms, but these are not sufficient."

An election is expected to be held sometime between December 2015 and March 2016.
