MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- In a rare public appearance, Cuban leader Fidel Castro reportedly met with 30 Venezuelans at a school in Havana this week.

According to our news partners  the Miami Herald, this was his first public appearance in more than a year.

Castro reportedly met with a Venezuelan delegation called II Vuelo de la Solidaridad Bolívar-Martí that is taking part in political and social activities on the island.

Cuba's state run newspaper Granma reported the 30 minute was a " Casual, unforgettable encounter with Fidel. "

Pictures posted on the Herald's site, show Castro in a car with a window open, shaking hands with various people on the street. In two of the pictures you see the person shaking Castro's hand wearing or holding items with the Venezuelan flag print.

Castro's failing health led him to cede power to his brother Raul Castro in 2006. Since then, Fidel has made few public appearances.

In March,  Granma published thirteen pictures of Fidel Castro where he reportedly met with the five Cuban spies who returned home after serving long prison terms in the U.S.
