FHP: Hit & Run Accident Kills Bicyclist In SW Miami-Dade

MIAMI (CBSMiami)- A fatal hit and run accident in Southwest Miami-Dade left one person dead on Thursday morning.

Nelson Rivera Rodriguez, 33, was driving his white Chevy sedan south on US-1 and near SW 260 Street when, according to the Florida Highway Patrol, he hit a bicyclist who was crossing US-1.

The bicyclist was killed. Rodriguez reportedly sped off down US-1.

Witnesses called the police to report the accident and an alert was issued throughout Miami-Dade County. Shortly after, Miami-Dade Police found Rodriguez in his car near SW 296 St.

Rodriguez was arrested and taken into custody by the FHP.

"Through witnesses and registration for Miami-Dade County, we were able to apprehend the individual not too far from the scene," said FHP Trooper Joe Sanchez. "Thanks to that individual who provided that information to us, we were able to not only identify the vehicle, but also that subject behind the wheel, which is very important in this criminal investigation."

According to authorities, Rodriguez could be facing several charges including, property damage, DUI and leaving the scene of an accident.

Investigators believe the victim is from another country and they're still trying to contact his family.
