MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- It's the children they do it for - the reason they come together to remember those lost to gun violence and the names are numerous.

Ten years ago Sherdavia Jenkins was caught in the crossfire of two men. The bullet from an AK-47 hit her, killing the honor roll student.

"I'm going to always keep her memory alive that's first and foremost," said Sherdavia's father David Jenkins.

David Jenkins says, in spite of his loss, he continues to see the positive in life.

"Something else good did come out of it and that's Sherdavia's little sister, my youngest daughter, Catherine who's going away to college this fall," said David.

"Can something good come out of Liberty City and the answer is yes. Why? Because I came from Liberty City, in fact, I grew up in Liberty Square housing projects," said Dr. Dorothy Bendross-Mindingall

Sherdavia's former principal and a current Miami-Dade County Public School board member says she will always remember the little girl she called a genius.

Ten years later Sherdavia's story has been repeated many times - most recently 6-year-old King Carter. His father spoke to the kids gathered at the Sherdavia Jenkins Peace Park on Friday. He says he'll continue to speak out until the violence stops.
