ALLIGATOR ALLEY (CBSMiami) – The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating a crash that claimed two lives along Alligator Alley.

A man and woman died after their car plunged into a canal while they were traveling northbound, near Mile Marker 33/34z.

The crash shut down both northbound lanes for hours. Motorists were seen getting out of their cars, waiting and watching.

"The car veered off to the right and ended up in the water," said one man, stuck for about two hours, traveling from the Keys to Tampa.

Authorities believe the driver lost control when the tread from one of the tires blew off. Divers were brought in for a search and rescue, pronouncing both victims dead at the scene.

Authorities have not yet released the names of the victims.
