Fans Gather In Brickell To Watch World Cup Quarterfinal Action

BRICKELL (CBSMiami) - It's the Fourth of July and while America may be out of the World Cup, fans are still gathering to watch all the games.

Soccer frenzy is still going strong in South Florida as fans are hitting the streets early Friday to catch their favorite teams in the World Cup quarterfinals.  The first match of the day featured Germany taking down France 1-0 to reach their fourth consecutive World Cup Quarterfinal.

"This is the fourth time for us that we have come this far," said Germany fan Crisp Haugnei to CBS 4's Marybel Rodríguez after the game. "Hopefully we take the win this time all the way to the end."

At Mary Brickell Village, the site of many World Cup watch parties, fans lined up for hours to get a seat inside the many restaurants to watch the game.  "We have been out here for four hours, the ambiance is great…it really is the next best thing," said a soccer fan.

The quarterfinals continue Friday afternoon when host nation Brazil faces rival Colombia at 4 p.m. in Fortaleza.

The soccer fever is being felt all over town and South Florida fans are excited to be a part of it.

"It was long overdue, soccer is a worldwide sport and it's about time it got to South Florida this crazy" said a diehard soccer fan.
