PERRY (CBSMiami/AP) — Family feuds should never get to this point.

A dispute between a father and son ended in homicide on the highway as their vacationing family returned home to Birmingham, Alabama.

According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, the family left their Orlando vacation early because of the fighting between the father, 40-year-old Daniel Lee Young, and son, 21-year-old Deontae Leqwan Young.

There were eight people in the Ford Expedition, including three children younger than five, and the father had been drinking "pretty heavily" that day, said Peach County Sheriff Terry Deese.

GBI Agent J.T. Ricketson said that shortly before midnight along Interstate 75, the father told his wife to pull over, and he came around to hit his son.

Deontae Young fired two shots at his father's chest and he fell into the highway.

The agent told The Macon Telegraph that it's "amazing" he wasn't hit by a passing vehicle, the agent said.

Daniel Young was pronounced dead at the scene early Wednesday.

Deontae Young was charged with murder. A prosecutor will decide whether it was self-defense.
