MIAMI GARDENS (CBSMiami) - The mother of the man killed by a Miami Gardens police officer says she's looking for justice. But she's also hoping for change.

"They murdered my son," Catherine Daniels said. "They shot him like an animal."

Daniels is channeling her anger and heartbreak into a push for training and reform.

She has started a non-profit organization in honor of her son, Lavall Hall.

"Catherine Daniels has formed Lala's House as a charitable organization to help raise awareness for people with mental illness and also to help raise awareness to how police and other members of the government deal with with people having episodes related to mental illness," said family attorney Judd Rosen.

Daniels says Hall was having some sort of psychotic episode on February 15th when she called police for help.

"Please don't hurt my child please," she can be heard telling an officer in a police dash cam video.

The video, provided to and released by the family, shows an officer looking for Hall.

He's seen carrying a broom.

There's some sort of a scuffle off camera, and then, an officer shouts, "Get on the floor or you're dead... get on the ground."

Five shots were fired.

Attorneys for the family don't think this video paints a complete picture of what happened that morning.

"They refuse to give us any information. We believe there are two other video cameras available from two other police cars," attorney Glen Goldberg said.

Goldberg says public records requests have been denied, citing the ongoing investigation.

But as the State Attorney's Office tries to determine if a crime was committed, the officer who fired the fatal shot, Eddo Trimino, is back to work.

CBS4 has learned he's been assigned to the training unit.

"He is training officers on the use of firearms," Goldberg said. "If there's anyone that should not be training, it's Officer Trimino."

The attorney representing the officers in the civil case says he doesn't know whether there is any other video of the incident.
