DANIA BEACH (CBSMiami) – Family, friends and community members gathered Saturday for a welcome home celebration for a South Florida teen who was the victim of a hit-and-run crash that killed his little brother.

The family of Kelvron Florence held a block party at their Dania Beach home to honor him as he continues to recover after being released from the hospital earlier this week.

Players from UM's football team even came out to show support and take pictures with the 14-year-old victim.

"It has been a long road for us so now it's time to celebrate with Kelvron," said his mother Selena Brown.

But this happy time is clouded in grief.  As he celebrates recovery, Kelvron and his parents also mourn the death of his 8-year-old little brother A.J.

The two were run down back in December by a hit-and run-driver near Sterling and Bryan roads in Dania Beach, as they walked home from a basketball game

The brothers were both put on life support for several weeks.

It took several weeks, but a tip from a community member lead police to the suspect, 22-year-old Zachary Benjamins.

Kelvron was in the hospital and didn't get to attend his brother's funeral.

[He has been] "Depressed very sad, it sank in once he got home that his younger brother was gone but we are by his side," said Godmother Benita McKnight.

Now the family waits on justice for Kelvron and closure for his 8-year-old brother A.J.

"We have a long road to go as a family but with prayer we will make it through," said McKnight.
