Emergency Meeting On New Insurance Commissioner

TALLAHASSEE (CBSMiaim/AP) — Gov. Rick Scott and other top Republicans will hold an emergency meeting Friday to try, once again, to pick a new insurance commissioner.

Scott and three members of his Cabinet will interview new candidates for the job. They may then vote to hire someone for the position.

The meeting comes just days before Insurance Commissioner Kevin McCarty is scheduled to leave his job.

McCarty has offered to stay until a successor is picked, because so far, Scott and Chief Financial Officer Jeff Atwater have been at odds over who to hire as a replacement. Both officials have veto power over the choice.

But the two GOP officials disagree on whether McCarty can stay past May 2. Scott's top lawyer says no, while Atwater's general counsel disputes that.
