It's classified as a weak El Niño, which means that widespread global impacts are not expected. However there will be some of the usual impacts of an El Niño in some regions.

In most El Niño years there tend to see more thunderstorms, cooler temperatures but a smaller number of Atlantic hurricanes.

The most southern track of the jet stream in an El Niño season allows for the southern United States to see above-average rainfall which would be good news for drought-stricken areas from California to Texas.

In South Florida, residents need to be on guard for the potential for an active severe weather season beginning earlier than usual especially in April and May.

This development is being monitored closely and further updates will occur in the next several weeks.
