Early Voting Underway In Miami-Dade, Monroe

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Voters in Miami-Dade County and Monroe County are heading to polls Monday for the start of early voting. The early voting is for this year's August 26 statewide primary.

After complaints of extreme wait times at early voting sites in 2012, the Florida Legislature gave elections supervisors more flexibility with hours and voting locations.

Counties in Florida must offer at least eight days of early voting for eight hours a day and can expand to 14 days for up to 12 hours a day at places such as city halls, election offices and libraries.

Early voting began at 7 a.m. Monday in Miami-Dade and at 11 a.m. Friday, August 15 in Broward.

Early voting runs from Monday, August 11 through August 23 from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.  in Monroe County.

The biggest races this year are the Democratic primaries for governor, between Charlie Crist and Nan Rich; and the race for attorney general, between George Sheldon and Perry Thurston.

The Republican primary ballot will include Gov. Rick Scott and his challengers Yinka Abosede Adeshina and Elizabeth Cuevas-Neunder.

Voters can cast ballots at any early voting site in their county of residence.
