MIAMI BEACH (CBSMiami) -- A taxi driver was seriously hurt in a Wednesday morning crash on Miami Beach that police said was caused by a drunk driver.

Miami Beach Fire Rescue responded to the scene at Collins Avenue and 38th Street around 6:30 a.m.

Upon their arrival, a Volkswagen van was overturned and a man was discovered laying in the middle of the street, barely moving.

Police said that man was in the process of stepping out of his taxi cab, which was parked in the safety zone, when it was hit by the van.

The van's driver, Odessa Barandon, 23, had bloodshot, watery eyes and slurred speech, according to an arrest report.

Barandon told officers she "didn't know what happened, I was driving one minute and next, I am upside down."

She was charged with driving under the influence.

Traffic was temporarily diverted and the street was reopened about an hour later.
