MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- Two teenagers were hospitalized Sunday after they were struck while walking along the sidewalk by a wrong way driver.

Miami Fire Rescue said the driver was heading eastbound in the westbound lanes of N.E. 11th Street near 1st Avenue, when he crashed into another vehicle before hitting the teens.

The female victims, ages 18 and 19, were rushed to the hospital with serious injuries, but were said to be in stable condition.

The driver reportedly tried to flee after the accident. Officials said a security guard who witnessed it was able to stop the driver and hold him until police arrived.

Officers gave him a field sobriety test before cuffing him and placing him in their patrol car.
