Driver pulled from water after truck plunges into canal near Miami-Dade's Redland

Good Samaritans step in to save driver who ended up in Naranja-area canal

A driver was pulled from the water after their truck plunged into a canal in Southwest Miami-Dade on Friday morning.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue said around 10 a.m. they received a call about the crash at SW 157 Avenue and SW 264 Street near Naranja. The area is very rural with several nurseries.

When deputies and rescue crews arrived, they were able to get the driver out. Two divers searched the area, but found no one else.

Scott Cayemi said he watched the scene unfold.

"An officer got into my lane, I stopped, I thought they were chasing somebody. As I looked to the right I saw that there was a car in the canal. The officer ran, jumped in to save the gentleman that was in there. That's what I saw, a lot of brace cops helping a guy out," he said.

The driver was airlifted to the trauma center at HCA Florida Kendall Hospital in critical condition, according to the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office.
