MIAMI (CBSMiami) -  Investigators have considerable evidence to go on as they search for a hit and run burglar who slammed into a car and SUV parked in front of a Miami police officer's home.

"It sounded like a bomb went off."

That's how an undercover Miami police officer described the sound of a burglary suspect crashing both cars parked in front of his west Kendall home.

Miami-Dade police were chasing the suspected car burglar when he lost control and slammed into the vehicles. The driver then took off on foot.

"We just heard a loud bang and it sound like a bomb went off here at my house," said the officer who did wish to be identified. "We came outside and saw my car pried up and flipped over to the side. It was damaged by another vehicle, it crashed into my vehicle, popping it on top of my other vehicle."

The driver also hit a "no outlet" street sign near the front of the house - it ended up on a roof.

Neighbors were awakened by the crash and the legion of police who swarmed the area.

"I saw people with flak jackets and what looked like semi-automatic rifles and I was uncomfortable," said one of the officer's neighbors. "There were dogs, K-9s, which were walking up and down the street."

Police set up a perimeter and conducted a massive search but failed to take him into custody.

Sources told CBS4's Gary Nelson, the car the burglar was driving was not stolen, so they should be able to connect him to it in some way. Also, sources say, the man left considerable DNA evidence in the SUV that he left behind.
