DAVIE (CBSMiami) – Well that didn't take long.

In a move that had been rumored throughout the week, the Miami Dolphins officially announced the release of Pro Bowl cornerback Brent Grimes.

The team made the announcement on Twitter at exactly 4 p.m. on Wednesday, the moment that the NFL's free agency period began.

Grimes played three seasons in Miami, starting 47 games and intercepting 13 passes.

He was selected to the Pro Bowl in all three seasons with the Dolphins.

Reports of Grimes' release came shortly after word of Miami acquiring cornerback Byron Maxwell from the Philadelphia Eagles earlier this week.

The trade was put on hold for a few days but was reported to be finalized earlier on Wednesday.

Miami also acquired linebacker Kiko Alonso and the 13th pick in this year's draft in exchange for the 8th pick.

Grimes was named one of the 50 best Dolphins players of all time by the team, which celebrated its 50th season in 2015.

While Grimes was known to be a quiet, unassuming player, issues arose with his wife Miko as she was often outspoken on social media and feuded with several members of the media.
