MIAMI (CBSMiami) – A dog seen forced from a car has been given surgery and is recovering from a broken jaw.

Joshua Brewer saw the dog forced from the car Thursday near Broward Boulevard and helped take it to a rescue.

"I realized his jaw was hanging," said Brewer. "And it was bloody and fresh."

Brewer reached out to the rescue group 100+ Abandoned Dogs of Everglades, Florida.

"The saddest part is that after he was beaten and his jaw was broken he was chasing after owner to say, 'why are you leaving me here?'" said Amy Roman with the rescue group.

The dog now named Nerak was given surgery at Lauderdale Veterinary Specialists.

Officials have not said whether the dog will be available for adoption once it is healed.

A website was set up to raise funds for the dog's medical care.
