MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- A dog rescued from a southwest Miami-Dade canal  has passed away.

The yellow Labrador Retriever - nicknamed Lily - died of respiratory complications - 10 days after crews had saved her from drowning.

Back on March 8th, firefighters pulled the female retriever from a 30-foot deep canal at SW 144th Street and 157th Avenue.

The dog put up a fight, struggling to stay above water for at least 20 minutes before she was saved and taken to the rescue group who cared for her.

Labrador Rescue of Florida had taken Lily to a vet where she was being treated for water in the lungs, hip trouble and then kennel cough.

They had hoped Lily would recover and be put up for adoption

Officials said she appeared to be about 6-years old.
