WEST PALM BEACH (CBSMiami/AP) – The doctor charged with corruption, alongside New Jersey Senator Robert Menendez, has pleaded not guilty in an alleged Medicare fraud scheme.

Dr. Salomon Melgen, during a brief court appearance Thursday, was ordered by U.S. Magistrate Judge James Hopkins to remain behind bars.

Prosecutors have called Melgen a flight risk.

The 60-year-old eye surgeon was charged in a 76-count Medicare fraud case Tuesday, two weeks after another federal case charged him with corruption linked to Menendez.

In the latest case, Melgen is accused of trying to bilk Medicare out of as much as $190 million.
