MIAMI (CBSMiami/AP) – It's happened before and it's happening again…dozens of brown pelicans have been found mutilated.

In response, a construction business is offering a $5,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible.

The reward was announced by Glen Larson, president of the Dock and Marine Construction Corp., following the news that about a dozen Florida Keys brown pelicans have been found recently with their pouches slit. The mutilated birds slowly starve to death since they are unable to eat.

Larson says his company frequently rescues injured pelicans. The bird also is part of the company's logo.

Pelicans are protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, and anyone caught harming them can be prosecuted under federal law, facing possible fines and prison time.
