Dire Warning From Opa-locka Finance Chief

MIAMI (CBSMiami) — Opa-locka's city government apparently doesn't have enough money to keep the lights on.

Over the weekend the city's chief financial officer, Charmaine Parchment, sent an email to Yvette Harrell, the city's acting manager, which stated the city would run out of money after making next week's payroll, according to CBS4 news partner The Miami Herald.

In the email, she also pointed out that the city's recovery plan would not be enough to save it from insolvency.

Parchment's assessment is far more dire than the one given by months by top administrators.

City Manager David Chiverton, who placed himself on leave amid a federal probe into accusations that he solicited bribes from a local businessman, said earlier this month that under their recovery plan the city would have a balanced budget by the end of the fiscal year.

Parchment said said the city's growing shortfall will soon reach $4.5 million — which is about a third of Opa-locka's annual budget.
