TALLAHASSEE (CBSMiami/NSF) - In what could be one of the most fiercely contested legislative races of the year, Republican Sen. Miguel Diaz de la Portilla collected more than $125,000 in April to help fuel his campaign.

Diaz de la Portilla, Miami, is running in a redrawn Senate District 37 against Rep. Jose Javier Rodriguez, a Miami Democrat.

Diaz de la Portilla collected $125,600 and had $157,600 in cash on hand as of the end of the month. Rodriguez raised $19,780 during April and had $119,495 in cash on hand.

Candidates and political committees were required to file updated campaign-finance information by a Tuesday deadline.

Senate District 37 was redrawn as a result of a long-running lawsuit that challenged the constitutionality of Senate districts.
