KEY WEST (CBSMiami/AP) — Authorities are searching for a man who tried to take the life of a Florida Keys police officer.

A deputy has been shot in the Florida Keys while investigating a robbery, but officials say he was protected by his bullet proof vest.

Monroe County Sheriff's Deputy Josh Gordon and other deputies were on the lookout for a man suspected in a robbery Saturday night.

Authorities said when the deputies tried to stop the car, Timothy Thomas, 25, opened fire, striking Gordon in the chest.

Thomas fled the scene and remains at large.

Authorities said Thomas has an extensive criminal history and should be considered armed and dangerous.
