Monroe Deputies Warn Of Scam That Ends In Theft

KEY LARGO (CBSMiami) -- Detectives are warning business owners about a scam which led to the theft of a Key Largo business.
Monroe County deputies said a person poses over the phone and in person as a corporate executive and asks for money and items.
In the instance of the Key Largo Tom Thumb store, the clerk at the store got a call from someone claiming to be from the corporate office just after midnight on Friday.
The man, over the phone, said he would be sending someone to the store to pick up money "for an invoice" and also two cartons of cigarettes. The man said he would call and clear it with the store's manager.
The man then acted like he was talking to the store manager to get clearance.
About two hours later, a woman walked into the store and said she was the daughter of the man who was supposed to pick up the money.
The clerk gave her the money along with the two cartons and left.
The clerk later called the store manager and asked her if she knew about the money that was picked up. She said she did not and that's when they called police to report the theft.
Detectives investigating the case are concerned the people involved in the theft might try and do it again to another business.
