Deadly Plane Crash In Waters Off Marathon

MIAMI (CBSMiami) - A Jupiter man was killed in a small plane crash in the waters off Marathon.

A man who heard the crash went out on his boat and found debris from the 1973 single engine Piper aircraft about a mile offshore of 63rd Street just after midnight, according to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office.

The U.S. Coast Guard and the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission located the plane which was fully submerged.

The pilot, who was the only person on board, has been identified as 53-year old Edward Elgin.

According to his family, Elgin was in the Florida Keys for lobster season.
