Grandmother killed in Davie fire early Friday morning, family members say

Davie grandmother killed in fire day after Christmas, family says

An investigation is underway in Davie after officials say an apartment fire left a woman dead on Friday morning.

According to the Davie Police Department, officers and members of Davie Fire Rescue raced to the 6800 block of College Court Manor after a woman called 911 reporting the fire.

"It feels surreal. I don't think it's hit me yet because I don't really know anybody around here," said Alexia Sevilla, who called 911. "It was one of those moments where it doesn't even feel real because I'm like, 'Am I smelling smoke? Is this really happening? Is this really happening the day after Christmas?"

When fire crews arrived at the scene, they said they found an active fire and worked to extinguish the flames.

Davie police said one woman was found dead inside the home. Officials have not yet identified the victim, but CBS News Miami spoke with family members of the victim and said it was their grandmother who died.

Davie Fire Rescue said the State Fire Marshal's Office was notified of the incident and they will be responding to the scene to investigate the cause and origin of the fire.

No other information was immediately available.
