Two Dead, Including Child, In Plantation Crash On University Drive

FORT LAUDERDALE (CBS Miami) -- Two people, including a child, were killed in a horrific crash early Thursday morning on University Drive in Plantation.

The accident happened just after 3:30 a.m. between 3rd and 5th Street.

Police said the driver of a 2014 Mercedes Benz lost control and slammed into a tree. The force of the impact split the car in two.

"I woke up to what sounded like a crash and then I looked outside and I saw the car in flames," said Frances Velasco. "I was about to call 911 and that's when I heard the sirens coming."

The man driving the car and a child died.

A witness told CBS4 they heard a woman on the side of the road screaming for help. Velasco said she heard the screams.

"Two booming sounds and a woman screaming for her baby like 'my baby, my baby'," she said.

The early morning crash scene shut down the northbound and southbound lanes for hours.

Police have not released the names of those who died or said if they were related.
