Dania Community Rallies Support For Hit-&-Run Victim Released From Hospital

DANIA BEACH (CBSMiami) – The community gathered on Thursday in support for a South Florida teen who was the victim of a hit-and-run crash.

"On behalf of the city of Dania Beach and all of the residents here we want to welcome you home," said Dania Beach Vice Mayor Bobbi Grace.

Sheriff's deputies and community members gathered in front of Grace's home of for a drive way initiative meeting to show support for Kelvron Florence as he continues his recovery and rehabilitation. Kelvron was just released from the hospital yesterday.

"We've got a lot of players and when we play on the same team and we play to win, we all win," said Grace.

Kelvron and his 8-year-old brother were rundown back in December by and hit-and-run driver. Kelvron's little brother A.J. died as a result of the crash.

It took several weeks but a tip from a community member lead police to the suspect, 22-year-old Zachary Benjamins.

The vice mayor says that's why it's important for the community to work with police.

"It could have been anybody's kids, so you know, it just makes me feel great that its somebody that's out there that still cares," said the boys' mother Selena Brown.

Grace announced the community group will be raising money to help Kelvron through his years of college.

Broward County Sheriff's deputies also spoke to residents about how they can work with police to curb crime in their neighborhood.
