MIAMI (CBSMiami) - In an effort to reduce crime and keep teens safe overnight, the Miami and Miami-Dade police departments are implementing their summer curfew.

Beginning Monday, June 29th, it is against the law for children younger than 17 to be out on their own between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. from Sunday through Thursday. On Friday and Saturday, curfew hours are midnight until 6 a.m.

Officers will be asking anyone they suspect of breaking the curfew for identification. Any teen caught violating the curfew will be given a citation and taken home, or to a holding facility. If a teen is caught violating the curfew for a third time, their parents will be fined up to $500.

There are some exceptions to the curfew.

Among them are teens traveling to or from work without stopping; teens who have written permission from a parent or guardian to run an errand; aiding or assisting in an emergency; traveling to or from school, religious, civic, or county-sponsored events; teens accompanied by a parent, legal guardian, or someone 21 or older with permission to be responsible for the juvenile; teens returning from a public event (with permission) if the event began before 10 p.m. and teens standing on the sidewalk of their own residence.

Another exception will be teens who are legally married.

Teens who are homeless and/or living in a halfway house are also exempt.
