Dade Public Works Employee Guilty In Bribery Case

FORT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami/AP) — A Miami-Dade public works employee who oversaw about 24,000 roadway lights has pleaded guilty to taking bribes from a lighting contractor.

George Brown, 50, entered his plea last week before a Fort Lauderdale federal judge to the bribery count.

Court records show that Brown accepted bribes worth more than $13,000 from the lighting contractor in 2011 and 2012 in exchange for using the contractor's products. The bribes took the form of merchandise including an air conditioning unit, a stainless steel refrigerator and a kitchen oven.

The contractor cooperated with the FBI and recorded some conversations with Brown.

Brown faces a maximum 10-year prison sentence.
