DAVIE (CBSMiami) – A Craigslist deal gone wrong appears to be the root cause of a deadly shooting at a CVS in Davie.

A devastated mother cried over the death of her only son, Andre Smith, at a candlelight vigil held in Pembroke Pines.

The 20-year-old was shot and killed inside the CVS drug store at University and Griffin Road in Davie Wednesday.

Police say Matthew Barry shot him while trying to get away from him.  It all began when the two met in the parking lot. Smith placed a Craigslist ad selling an iPhone 7.

"It's an iPhone that I bought and he was going to sell it on Craigslist," said Smith's mother Andrea Goulbourne-Smith.

Barry was buying it and felt he was about to be robbed by Smith, who was there with another man.  Police say when Barry went into the store asking the clerk to call 911, Smith was following behind.

"The surveillance video clearly shows that Mr. Barry enters the store and that Mr. Smith is right behind him. It looks like Mr. Barry is attempting to get away from Smith," said Davie Police Department Major Dale Engle.  "The surveillance video also shows Smith pursing Barry around different displays at the front of the store."

Moments later, shots rang out inside while frightened shoppers ran for cover.

Thursday night, dozens of Smith's friends released balloon into the air and lit candles in his memory as his loved ones try to understand how a Craigslist transaction ended up claiming his life.

"You're a wicked person. Over a cellphone. A wicked person," said Euphemia Morgan, Smith's grandmother. "But his day is coming and karma is the word."

"He will be punished. He will get his day in court. It's not over. He might think he's free now. He's not free at all. My son's blood is on his hand, and he will get what he deserves," said Goulbourne-Smith.

The shooter has not been charged in the case. The investigation continues.

Police say be careful when making transactions through websites like Craigslist.

To be on the safe side, you can always ask to meet up at a police station.
