PLANTATION (CBSMiami) -- A Plantation mother accused of tossing her child into a dumpster remains behind bars.

Meantime, Catrice Sheffield's  2-year old  daughter is in the care of her paternal grandmother but her father may get custody.

On Thursday, the father of the child - Kinzell Payne - said he wanted custody of the little girl. A judge said he could get her once he has a clean drug test.

Sheffield's mother made a bid for custody at a shelter hearing but her daughter made it clear because of past conflicts she preferred the baby's father or paternal grandmother to have custody.

Earlier that same day, a judge set Sheffield's bond at $16,000. If she posts bond, Sheffield will be fitted with an ankle monitor and be allowed to have supervised visits with her daughter.

Sheffield was arrested after witnesses said they saw her throw her child into a dumpster near Plantation General Hospital.

When asked why she did it, she told witnesses, "I had a miscarriage five months ago and I'm depressed," according to the police report.

Police said Sheffield showed no remorse and didn't ask how her daughter was doing after the incident. They say she told them "everyone is crazy. I didn't throw my daughter in the dumpster. I put her in the dumpster."

Sudien Graham said she saw what happened and rushed over to help the child.

"I look around and see the kid in the trash," said Graham. "After I retrieve the kid from the trash, I ran after the mom."

Graham said she hopes Sheffield is able to get some help and is glad the child was not hurt.

Sheffield is now facing charges for child abuse and resisting arrest.
