MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- Several people were injured Thursday afternoon when a 150-foot harbor cruise ship crashed into the wharf alongside a San Diego Pier.

The Adventure Hornblower struck the edge of the waterfront promenade in the Embarcadero area of San Diego Harbor shortly before 1 p.m., according to the city Fire-Rescue Department.

Several potentially serious injuries were reported, fire Capt. Joe Amador said. He says three of those injured in the accident were taken to hospitals.

Amador says there was apparently a mechanical malfunction that prevented the boat from stopping in time as it was docking.

It's not immediately known how many people were aboard the vessel.

The 22-year-old three-deck ship offers bay dinner cruises, sightseeing tours and ocean whale-watching outings.

At last check, a tugboat was working on pulling the vessel away from the pier.
