MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- A cruise ship worker has been sentenced to more than 30 year behind bars for attempted murder and aggravated sexual abuse of  a passenger.

Local and federal officials said 29- year old Ketut Pujayasa, an Indonesian national working, with Holland America cruise line, brutally beat and attacked a 32-year old female passenger on February 14, 2014.

During the attack Pujayasa choked, strangled, and beat the victim repeatedly with various objects including a telephone cord and a curling iron cord.

Meantime, the passenger tried to scream and get away but ended up unconscious at least once during the attack which is when he sexually assaulted her, according to officials.

At one point during the struggle, they ended up on the balcony. That's when Pujayasa allegedly tried to throw her overboard but was not able to.

The passenger was able to storm out of her state room and run to another passenger for help.

Pujayasa pled guilty to the attack on September 29, 2014 and is expected to be deported after serving his sentence.
