Cousteau's Underwater Visitors Include Painter
ISLAMORADA (CBSMiami/AP) — The grandson of ocean exploration pioneer Jacques Cousteau continues to live underwater as part of an experiment in the Florida Keys and is getting some visitors.
The artist Wyland visited Fabien Cousteau at the Aquarius Reef Base last week and painted a portrait of Jacques Cousteau from the sea floor using environmentally friendly paints on canvas.
Cousteau and researchers from Florida International University dove June 1 to Aquarius to study the coral reef. To mark the 31-day mission's mid-point this week, the FIU researchers returned to the surface. They were replaced by a team from Northeastern University.
Cousteau also was visited this week by actor Adrian Grenier and retired NASA astronaut Clayton Anderson.
Cousteau's activities underwater also include filmmaking, online chats with classrooms worldwide and marine research. He is scheduled to return to the surface July 2nd.
