Commissioners Take Another Step In Aim At Making Pools Safer

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Miami-Dade commissioners took another step Tuesday in trying to make pools safer—and perhaps help some homeowners save money.
Commissioners asked Mayor Carlos Gimenez to ask insurance companies to take action, giving discounts on homeowners insurance for pool owners who have their pool inspected.
The push for pool safety comes after the April 2014 incident when a 7-year-old, Calder Sloan, was electrocuted while swimming in the family pool. Investigators found a number of issues wrong with the pool and its lighting system.
Following CBS4 David Sutta's investigation, Miami-Dade and Broward passed ordinances that makes new pools safer.

Also, they are creating awareness campaigns to ask current pool owners to have it inspected.
Similar legislation is being considered in the state during Florida's 60-day legislative session, which began Tuesday.
Miami-Dade is asking the mayor to look into the discounts on having pools inspected, making them safer by bringing them up to code. The idea would be similar to how wind storm coverage currently is; if you have your home inspected, install shutters and take other pro-active measures your insurance premium costs come down.
The Mayor is to report back in 60-days with an answer.
