COCONUT GROVE (CBSMiami) – Miami-Dade County Commissioners are facing a tough debate on how to save the Coconut Grove Playhouse.

The current county plan calls for a smaller theater to be operated by Florida International University and GablesStage.

But, according to CBS4 news partner's The Miami Herald, Miami-Dade Commissioner Xavier Suarez and Arsht Center Chairman Mike Eidson are proposing a larger theater of about 700 to 750 seats.

The theater would be run by FIU and a new non-profit group that Eidson is forming.

The project may involve actor Kevin Spacey as artistic director—although he has, as of yet, not committed to anything.

CBS4 News Partner's the Miami Herald contributed to this report.
