Commission Hits Stalemate Over Union Health Contributions
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – The only thing missing from the Miami-Dade County Commission meeting Thursday was Bill Murray because it felt like Groundhog Day.
The county commission voted again to put an end to a healthcare contribution requiring employees to give up five percent of their base pay, according to CBS4 news partner the Miami Herald. Just like last month, the vote wound up 8-5 in favor of ending the contribution.
And just like last month, Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez said he would veto the plan and keep the contribution in place. Plus, the 8-5 vote is not a veto-proof majority, meaning that once again Gimenez's veto will stand and the contribution will remain in place.
At one point, a compromise appeared to be in the air, but just like Washington, D.C., the commission ground to a halt over paying for the end of the contribution.
So, after a second commission meeting trying to come up with a solution for the contribution issue, everyone was right back where they started from at the beginning of the day.
