Children catch 7-foot hammerhead shark in Sunny Isles while fishing, authorities say
A group of children fishing Monday afternoon at Newport Pier caught a 6- to 7-foot hammerhead shark, according to Sunny Isles Beach police.
Police said the children brought the shark to shore and released it, but it became stranded in the shallow surf.
Sunny Isles Beach Ocean Rescue lifeguards responded and cleared out swimmers in nearby waters before guiding the shark beyond the pier and back into open waters.
